Beyond Bubble Bath: Self-Care for Real Life

Happy International Self-Care Day!

Before you continue reading, take one slow, comfortable breath. Let your exhale be a little longer than your inhale.

Notice whether anything shifts, even slightly.

That small pause counts.

Self-care is often presented as something we need to schedule, purchase, or perform correctly. We see bubble baths, spa days, exercise routines, and beautifully organized wellness rituals. All of those things can be wonderful, but self-care is not defined by a particular activity.

It begins by noticing what you need.

For much of my life, I did not do that. Everyone else's needs were important. I was the mom, executive, problem-solver, the go-to resource, and “rock” everyone depended on. I became so accustomed to functioning under extreme pressure for so long that I did not recognize stress as stress. I thought I was built to function in constant stress, handling everything because I was great at getting everything done.

Eventually, my body made it impossible to keep ignoring what I needed.

That experience taught me something I wish I had understood much earlier: we should not have to reach a breaking point before allowing ourselves care and support.

Self-care is not always relaxing. Sometimes, it means establishing a boundary, asking for help, canceling something, making a medical appointment, or admitting that you cannot continue carrying everything alone.

Other times, it is much smaller: one breath, a warm drink, a few quiet minutes, a walk outside, or a familiar object that reminds you to pause.

The important question is not, “Am I doing self-care correctly?”

It is asking, "What would support me in this moment?"

Your answer will likely change throughout the day. In one moment, you might need help settling a busy mind. Later, you may need movement, comfort, connection, quiet, or the opportunity to receive care without having to do anything at all.

That understanding became the foundation of Be Your BLISS™.

I did not create Be Your BLISS because I had mastered a perfectly calm life. I do not believe such a life exists. I created it because I needed support that could fit into the life I was actually living.

I did not want another lengthy program, rigid routine, or commitment that would become one more thing on my to-do list. I had grown tired of carving out time to learn something, only to discover that I was also expected to adopt someone else’s rules, beliefs, or explanation for why it worked.

There are beautiful practices from cultures and traditions around the world that can help us pause, reconnect, and return to a calmer state. These traditions have their own histories and ways of understanding concepts such as breath, spirit, life force, and energy. I respect those differences, but I do not believe you must change your faith or worldview to discover which practices can support you.

Reiki helped me understand this personally. I did not need to abandon my existing beliefs or have all the answers before I could experience its calming, healing effect. What became most meaningful to me was also the simplest: intention, presence, and allowing myself to receive.

Simple does not always mean easy. Quieting a busy mind and focusing your attention can take practice. But it does not require perfection, special objects, or a complicated set of rules. That realization became part of the foundation of Be Your BLISS. It brings many supportive practices together while leaving room for you to decide what resonates. You can explore without pressure to believe, master, or follow one prescribed path.

I wanted choices, not quick fixes, but to make meaningful moments with an impact you can feel.

Sometimes, support needs to be immediate and available wherever life happens. That is where a short practice in the Be Your BLISS App can help. MoodMatch™ makes it easier to find something based on how you are feeling instead of expecting you to work through a prescribed sequence.

Sometimes, a practice becomes more meaningful when your surroundings support it. You might choose the Blissful Bath | Return to BLISS moment in the App, light a Return to BLISS Reiki candle, soften the lighting, and allow an ordinary bath to become an intentional pause.

The bath itself is not the answer to everything. Neither is the candle or the practice. They work together to help you create a moment in which you are paying attention to yourself.

That same connection can happen without a bath. A journal can hold thoughts you are ready to release. A Reminder to Pause jar can interrupt an automatic pattern of pushing through. A mug can become part of a quiet morning ritual. A crystal or piece of wall art can remind you of an intention you chose for yourself. The Wrapped in BLISS Moment Maker Box is a treasure for making meaningful moments.

These Moment Makers™ are not beautiful decorations pretending to solve stress. They are tangible cues that help bring the intention of well-being into the places where you live and work. They help us remember to make a moment for ourselves.

There are also times when self-care means allowing yourself to receive support.

A Reiki session can offer quiet space to rest without needing to accomplish anything. BEMER® sessions provide another in-person option for those interested in supporting healthy circulation and recovery. These experiences do not replace medical or mental health care, but they can become part of a broader, personal approach to well-being.

This is why Be Your BLISS is an ecosystem rather than one program or product. We all need different things at different times, which is what Be Your BLISS offers.

The App supports you in the moment. Moment Makers bring supportive intentions into your environment. Reiki and BEMER sessions create opportunities to receive more personalized care. You can use one, combine them, or choose something entirely different. There is no required path.

On International Self-Care Day, consider looking beyond what self-care is supposed to look like and ask yourself three questions and answer honestly:

What am I feeling?

What do I need?

What is one small way I can support myself right now?

Maybe you need two minutes with your feet firmly on the floor and your phone out of reach. Maybe you need to make your surroundings feel softer. Maybe you need to say no (this is underrated), ask for help, schedule a spa session, or speak with a healthcare professional.

Self-care is not always about adding something. Sometimes, it is choosing what you can release.

It is not about creating the perfect wellness routine. It is about building a more supportive relationship with yourself, one moment and one choice at a time.

I am still practicing this myself. I haven't met anyone, even in the wellness industry, who has "mastered" this. Everything is a practice for a reason. We are different moment to moment. What worked for me this morning is not going to work for me at the end of a tough day.

Today, choose one small act of care, not because you completed everything or earned a reward, but because your well-being matters. You matter.

One breath. One boundary. One meaningful moment.

No programs. No pressure. Just your way.
